The San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) College and Career Readiness Department operates California’s first registered youth apprenticeship program: Apprenticeships Reaching Career Horizons (ARCH). This innovative program is registered with both the Department of Apprenticeship Standards and the U.S. Department of Labor, setting it apart as a unique opportunity for high school students. To participate, students must be at least 16 years old. Through partnerships with local employers and school districts, apprentices gain real-world, industry-specific skills via on-the-job training. This hands-on experience is paired with related coursework at San Joaquin Delta College, designed to complement and reinforce what students are learning in the field.
Current registered occupations include: Assistant Farm Manager, Information Technology Support Specialist, Hospitality and Marketing Specialist, and Teacher’s Aide/Paraprofessional. However, the department can work with partners to develop additional occupations specific to their industry.
